Priceless Psalms/Forsaken?

By Talks

      July 29

Today Peter Fitch looks at Psalm 22. He thinks it is often badly understood and this leads him to speak about other places in the Bible that he believes are also misinterpreted: Genesis 1, the Book of Revelation, and Romans 1. Together, popular readings of these passages contribute to a conflict between science and religion, terrible views of God, and the tragic and unnecessary exclusion of people of different sexualities. Peter also speaks about why he thinks there are so many correspondences between Jesus’ life and passages in the Old Testament before he examines a few of the key ideas from the psalm.

Priceless Psalms Series

By Talks

      July 22

After focusing for some months on qualities necessary for spiritual formation from 2 Peter, Chapter 1, Peter Fitch starts a new series of talks. This one is on some of the psalms that he particularly loves. Today, he starts the series by discussing the two paths of goodness and wickedness that he sees described in Psalm 1. This leads to a discussion of whether or not God has favourites, and it also touches on questions about hell, something Peter thinks is badly understood. Part way through the talk he leads in a Lectio exercise to help people move from meditation to contemplation. Then he finishes with ideas about bees from Preston Pouteaux’s book, The Bees of Rainbow Falls. This author uses the craftsmanship of bees as an illustration of how we can all enrich and curate our neighbourhoods (something that flows from the desire for goodness seen in Psalm 1).

FLOW

By Talks

      July 15

Peter Fitch brings a collage together to talk about the idea of Flow. First there is a passage from Amos, chapter 5. Then there is a video from the BBC Ideas series. After that Peter reads a couple of sections from a book he is writing called Mystic Call to Social Change. Then he shows some video footage of Bishop Michael Curry from last week’s 79th General Assembly of the Episcopal Church of America. Everything in this talk is about being in the flow of what God is doing in our individual lives and in society as a whole.

Love

By Talks

      July 8

Peter Fitch comes to the pinnacle of his spiritual formation talks regarding 2 Peter, chapter 1. This time he studies agape, the great word for love. He revisits the end of John’s gospel to make some new points about the conversation where Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him. Then he looks at other aspects of love from many sources.

Teena Brown led the music part of our service today and she finished with a song by Michael Gungor (lyrics). It touched people deeply so we’ve included it, and the things people said about it, at the start of this recording. Then Peter gives his talk.
