Holding Hope

By Talks

      October 28

Jessica Williams, one of our favourite poets, gave this morning’s talk. She is visiting from Winnipeg and we were thrilled to have her speak to us. The focus is about the beauty and the sadness that co-exist in our lives and circumstances. It culminates in a personalized reading of Psalm 42. Beauty and sadness were both a part of this morning’s experience–it was like we were bathing in the thing she was describing. Earlier in the morning our worship singers, Geordie Hull and Gwen Bilsky, shared a song, Carry On, by Reuelle and Fleurie that corresponded with Jess’ talk in some meaningful ways. Here’s a link to the song’s video.

So Tired of Church

By Talks

      October 21

This Sunday was over-the-top with music and talks. Dr. Matt Balcarras and Dr. David Moore gave a shared teaching time that focused on justice issues. David’s talk was called “So Tired of Church”, referring especially to the kind of religion that allows corrupt systems to remain unchallenged. Both talks were beautiful and fit together, hand-in-glove.

Before they started, Becka Thiessen sang a song written out of Psalm 16. You can find it

      here
. After the talks Teena Brown led a song and then Becka came back and did one more.

Breaking Free from Shame-based Theology

By Talks

      October 14

Today Wendy VanderWal Gritter, Executive Director of Generous Space Ministries, brought a “sit-on-the-edge” of your seat talk from Psalm 51. She brings an alternative way of seeing, suggesting that the great sin that needs to be repented of is the “naval-gazing” of an isolating and individualistic shame theology. Instead, she wants to see people rooted and grounded in a true sense of their “beloved-ness.”

Hodgepodge on the Move

By Talks

      October 7

Peter Fitch tries to tie together some recent talks and ideas that have emerged at SCV or in his work at St. Stephen’s University. The result is a hint at how a theory of everything might affect our lives. This was Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and also the 26th birthday of our church.
