The Great Reversal

By Talks

<

The Great Reversal / December 30, 2018

Following on from last week’s talk by Hannah Bernard and Joy Green, Peter Fitch revisits some of the key ideas and then shares how they have been affecting his thinking. An important Biblical idea is the reversal of weak and strong. Peter suggests that this would be supremely true in relation to gender. As we go forward towards justice, beauty and compassion, the best parts of being female ought to play a greater role than the worst elements of maleness. If possible, it would be helpful to look at the power point for this talk while you are listening as there are quite a few images.

For the Love of Mary

For the Love of Mary / December 23, 2018

Hannah Bernard and Joy Green examine some stories that they feel are in need of redemption, especially Little Red Riding Hood and Eve in the Garden of Eden. In each of these, they think that underlying questions and assumptions need to be re-examined as there have been significant and damaging consequences for women. They would like to see women play the role of “wolf” in the fairy tale, and they think there would be great benefits for everyone if they did.

The talk is prefaced by a

      song
that Zoe Fitch and Dave Warne (Colourful Language) wrote for Isaac Fitch and Nancy Cockrum’s wedding. Based on a series of novels by Ursula K. Le Guin, they have a character sing, “I forgot just how much Light there is, until you gave it back to me.” At the end of the talk, Zoe and Dave sing another song that works perfectly with the theme of the teaching.

Peace

Peace / December 16, 2018

Mark Groleau gives a fantastic talk about the genealogy of Jesus that is found in Matthew, ch. 1. He suggests that this is actually a subversive message that contrasts God’s hope for humans with the self-aggrandizing efforts of the Roman emperors (and the rest of us!). It’s worth it to check the images on the power point presentation while you listen. We all have a way of building altars that try to demonstrate a perfect life to everyone round about. When we let that go, we can really begin to live.

Hope

By Talks

Hope / December 9, 2018

Peter Fitch gives a short message on hope from several Biblical passages and examples as well as from great quotes and ideas that he found from a variety of sources. Then others chime in with their ideas. Peter sees hope as being closely aligned with the courage to open your heart to allow God to implant a dream and the strength to walk toward it. This is both for our own lives and for those in need around us. The interactions were very rich today. Here is the quote on ‘privilege’ used in the talk.

Here is a

Liberated to Celebrate

By Talks

      December 2

Walter Thiessen extends Pete’s talk on contentment by sharing some thoughts on celebration as a “sacrament of enough” and as an act of justice when it helps us let go of grasping and exclusion.

Walter started the talk with the video of  Pharrell William’s song ‘Happy’ with people from 157 countries and ended with the movie dance scene mash up video of Justin Timberlake’s song ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling.

First week of Advent – we celebrated
