Shine

By Talks

Shine / January 26, 2020

Peter Fitch compares a thought from the Letter to the Romans with an idea that he found in the Talmud. Everyone is loved but love is greater in those to whom it has been revealed. He gets people to share their own thoughts about this concept and then he brings ideas from John Joseph Powell, a Jesuit priest and scholar who wrote a book called The Secret of Staying in Love. We can all play a part in helping other people to have love revealed in them.

The talk starts with Jonelle Martin beginning to share her story. Here is the transcript.

Anger and Forgiveness

Anger and Forgiveness / January 19, 2020

Vic Thiessen looks to Jesus’s anger on the day he cursed the fig tree and cleansed the temple (offering three different readings) for clues on dealing with the anger that is so prevalent in the world today (starting with our own). To exemplify this learning, Vic draws on what some have called the angriest film ever made: Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017).

Pray It Forward

By Talks

Pray It Forward / January 5, 2020

Peter Fitch wrestles with the meaning and practice of prayer. Is it something we do for ourselves or does it help to change the world? He draws upon a Victorian poet, several Medieval saints, a Buddhist master, a couple of Jewish thinkers, and several portions of Scripture as he tries to make room for past experiences in the thinking that makes the most sense to him today. He finds himself longing for a synthesis where prayer as both “attention” and “intention” meet.
