Reflecting on the lectionary readings and the people of the Exodus, Jess applies the practice of midrash to reframe what is often referred to as “grumbling stories” as an important example of self-advocacy from an oppressed people crying out for accountability of those in authority/holding power. She asks us to consider what might happen if we listened to that cry for justice longer, without jumping to quick fixes or solutions that we know don’t work. Instead, she invites us to stay in the discomfort of the messy middle and to allow that place of honesty, doubt, and vulnerability to teach us.
