SSU Public Lecture: Land, Dispossession, and the Doctrine of Discovery

Join St. Stephen’s University as we unpack the Doctrine of Discovery, the legal structure that continues to form the basis for the dispossession of Indigenous land in Turtle Island/North America and around the globe. Writer, speaker and activist Sarah Augustine, the co-founder and Executive Director of the Coalition
to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery, and Chief Hugh Akagi of the Peskotomuhkati Nation at Skutik, will share about their life experiences as Indigenous people from different parts of the continent to demonstrate the doctrine’s current impact, and lead us in discussion about ways to go forward in the context of Indigenous worldviews.
