Gratitude’s Origin Story

October 4, 2026

Gratitude begins with noticing. In Luke’s story of the ten people healed by Jesus, all ten receive the gift, but only one turns back to recognize it and give thanks. What might we discover if we became more intentional about noticing the small gifts, kindnesses, beauty and moments of grace that happen in the midst of ordinary—and sometimes difficult—days?

Drawing on Mary Oliver, Wendell Berry, and Tuesdays with Morrie, this talk explores gratitude not as pretending that everything is good, but as choosing to notice that the difficult thing is not the only thing that is true. We’ll consider a simple practice: Notice → Pause → Appreciate → Receive → Share. You can listen to Marilyn’s talk below, and view her powerpoint here.
