Satan, Sin and Surrender

February 22, 2026

On the first Sunday of Lent, Jess reflects on her own discomfort with scripture passages about sin and satan and then considers the value in facing the reality of both with honesty and compassion. She shares how she hears the lectionary readings telling us an essential truth: sin is real, satan is real, and our human desire for control is real. In the wilderness, Jesus resists the temptation to control and test rather than trust, or to become powerful through acquisition rather than acquiescence. Jess thinks about how letting go of our desire for control and surrendering our lives instead to God’s loving care can set us free. We end by listening to Sara Miles reflect on the meaning of Ash Wednesday in a video by The Work of the People. You can listen below and view her powerpoint here.
