Help! I Need Somebody!

By Talks

      March 25

Lindsay McKay speaks about Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey as crowds cried, “Hosanna.” This word meant, “Save us” or “Rescue us” and Lindsay asks, “what do we need to be saved from today?” One thing that she identifies for herself is how hard it is to ask for help when it is needed. She thinks we need to balance the value we place on independence with our very real need for dependence. Life goes better that way.

The Excellence of a Person

By Talks

      March 18

Peter Fitch continues his work on 2 Peter 1:2-8. He sees it as a pathway toward spiritual formation. Two weeks ago, in a talk called Step by Step, he began this series by speaking about the marriage between diligence and faith. To this we are encouraged to add “moral excellence”, but what is this? Aristotle gave a very precise meaning for the word that is used. Perhaps this can provide a clue to what this concept means.

International Women’s Day

By Talks

International Women’s Day /March 11, 2018

Beginning with a new poem by Jessica Williams, read by Rosie Sperling Funk, today’s service was completely designed and led by women from our community. Many voices took part. There were two original pieces of music, another new poem, several great quotations or readings, and some deeply moving reflections. Special thanks to Abby Pond and Amanda de Gruchy for giving leadership to the event as it unfolded. Person after person shared from the heart and there was a sense that we had all lived through something together that was of great significance–a picture of a better tomorrow where women’s voices are completely free, honoured, and respected.

Step by Step

By Talks

      March 4

Peter Fitch continues his recent focus on ideas related to spiritual formation by looking at the 8 steps in 2 Peter 1:2-8. He focused today on the marriage of faith and diligence. Making this time a little extra special was the fact that kids were invited to sit-in. They were given a list of words that Peter often uses and had an assignment to see how many of these words they could find in his talk. The last few minutes of this session became quite funny as they tried to get him to say all the words that were left on the sheet.
