Godliness

By Talks

      June 17

Continuing on with his emphasis on spiritual formation from ideas in 2 Peter, chapter 1, Peter Fitch tackles the meaning behind the word, eusebeia, or “godliness.” He looks at ancient Greek, Hebrew, and Indian ideas that help to illustrate this word. For instance, it was considered as the essential missing element that helped to turn “law” into “justice” in ancient Greek mythology. It was also used to translate the important Buddhist concept of dharma when early Buddhist teaching was translated into Greek. Then Peter talks about what God is like and what characteristics of this we can share when we try to help others.

Hanging in There

By Talks

      June 3

Peter Fitch continues the series on spiritual formation taken from 2 Peter, ch. 1. Today he talks about the difference between the two Greek words for patience, makrothumia and hupomone. Both are important but the latter is the one that can be translated “perseverance.” Peter explains why this is and then, using South Africa as an example, speaks about the societal need to push forward against repressive forces.

Revisiting Healing Prayers

By Talks

      May 27

Last fall Alex Henderson and a small team began praying for people in the cafe upstairs after Sunday morning services. Today they explain together why they have been doing this, some of what they have experienced, and what they feel they are learning. It’s a beautiful presentation with mature and sometime humorous perspectives on this important topic. A lady who happened to be with us today from out of province has been ill and one of her dear friends requested prayers for her before the service began. We were taken with the timing of this so we all joined our hearts and minds to pray for her at the end of the teaching.

Everything is Holy Now: Liberating the Spirit

By Talks

      May 20

Walter Thiessen talks about the “escape” of the Holy Spirit from the dark, fear-filled confines of the Holy of Holies to be poured out freely on old and young, men and women etc. As a result, everything is holy now if our eyes are open. And so Pentecost proceeds into Ordinary Time. Here is the link to video of song.

Self-control

By Talks

      May 13

Peter Fitch continues with his series from 2 Peter 1 on some of the essential elements of spiritual formation. Today he tries to define self-control. Then he speaks a little about how it’s importance has been recognized around the world, both in ancient and modern times. Finally, he gives a few ideas about how to develop more of this capacity. Of course, people listening chime in with their ideas–there are some rich moments.

Carousel – Let’s Get Creative

By Talks

Carousel – Let’s Get Creative /April 29, 2018

Carol Anne Wiebe took us deeper into thinking about Carousel, our new community formation program. It was a wonderful session but, unfortunately, it didn’t record. Her power point begins with some of the explanation that Peter brought the week before and then she added her own thoughts. After that she broke everyone up into small groups to talk about possible one-month courses or activities that people could organize. The results were outstanding! It looks as though there will be some rich learning and social opportunities to come.**** Recording found! Yea!
